Dank Vapes is not a cannabis company. It is a packaging brand — a black, gold, holographic, fruit-flavor-printed box and matching glass cartridge that anyone in the world can order in bulk off DHgate and Alibaba for roughly $0.65 to $0.85 per unit. There is no central producer, no licensed manufacturer, no extraction lab, no quality control, and no cannabis license anywhere with the name “Dank Vapes” on it. In about twelve months in 2019, a cheap viscosity hack added to that packaging brand killed 68 people. The empty boxes did not stop being printed.

What Dank Vapes actually is (the one-line version)

Columbia Journalism Review summarized journalist Emma Betuel’s investigation bluntly: “People need to know that Dank Vapes isn’t real.”

That’s the entire brand. The product inside any Dank Vapes–labeled cart is whatever the person who bought the empty box decided to fill it with — usually pesticide-loaded distillate cut with vitamin E acetate, MCT, or terpenes of unknown origin. Inverse’s reporting found one DHgate seller alone moved 8,270 Dank Vapes boxes between September 1–18, 2019 — about three weeks. The Doja app’s founder Mark Hoashi put it this way: “It’s not a singular facility. It’s just people in their garages filling them and selling them.”

This matters because “is the Dank Vape I just bought real?” is the wrong question. None of them are.

The EVALI outbreak — why Dank Vapes has a body count

In the summer and fall of 2019, U.S. emergency rooms started filling with otherwise-healthy young vape users presenting with severe lipoid pneumonia — bilateral lung infiltrates, hypoxia, a frighteningly high rate of ICU admission. CDC named it EVALI (E-cigarette, or Vaping, product use-Associated Lung Injury).

• 2,807 hospitalizations across all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
• 68 confirmed deaths in 29 states and D.C.
• Peak week: September 15, 2019, with 217 new hospitalizations in a single week

The single most common THC product reported by hospitalized patients was Dank Vapes. The December 2019 CDC MMWR report (mm6849e1) stated that 56% of EVALI patients nationwide specifically reported using Dank Vapes in the three months before their symptoms started — over 60% in the Northeast and South. In the Illinois-Wisconsin cluster, 66% of interviewed patients (57 of 86) reported Dank Vapes use.

CDC eventually identified the smoking gun: vitamin E acetate, a thickening agent dealers were using as a cutting filler. Minnesota’s law enforcement seizure study (mm6847e1) is the cleanest evidence. Cartridges seized in 2018 contained THC and MCT — no vitamin E acetate. Cartridges seized in September 2019 (75,000 of them) all contained vitamin E acetate. Every single Dank Vapes cart tested in the outbreak — both patient-supplied and law-enforcement-seized — contained it.

That’s the line. In about twelve months, a cheap viscosity hack added to a packaging brand killed 68 people.

Why Dank Vapes boxes still circulate in 2026

EVALI as a labeled crisis ended in early 2020, partly because CDC stopped tracking it as case counts declined and partly because of pandemic news displacement. The empty boxes did not stop being printed. Right now, in May 2026:

• DHgate listings for “Dank Vapes empty packaging” are still live, shipping from Shenzhen.
• Wholesale custom-box manufacturers (OXO Packaging, CBZ, Boxo, Customboxeslane) offer “custom Dank Vape packaging” as a stock catalog item.
• Black-market THC cart distribution in California alone is still estimated at roughly four times the size of the licensed market.
• Newer counterfeit packaging brands (Mario Carts, Exotic Carts, TKO Extracts, Cali Plug) operate on the same model, but Dank Vapes is the SEO-evergreen one because the EVALI search history is permanent.

The 2019 awareness wave never fully translated into 2026 buyer literacy. New users — especially the Delta-8 / Delta-9 demographic that came up after the original outbreak — frequently haven’t heard of EVALI at all.

The cultural takeaway has narrowed: Dank Vapes is the canonical example of “do not buy street carts.”
